Why We Exist
Founded in 2023 in Queenstown, a small town in the Eastern Cape, Sakhisizwe Digital Education was established to address the significant educational disparities rooted in economic inequality within the region. In an area where access to quality education remains a challenge, Sakhisizwe is committed to bridging these gaps by introducing innovative, technology-driven learning solutions that empower learners and communities.
Sakhisizwe Digital Education exists to tackle the systemic challenges in South Africa’s education system, many of which have been exacerbated by economic disparities and the far-reaching effects of COVID-19. The organization’s foundation was inspired by findings from the Progress InternationalReading Literacy Study (PIRLS), which highlighted South Africa’s troubling performance in reading and writing.
A large piece of our mission is to close historical gaps in education and bridge the digital divide by leveraging technology to make learning enjoyable, accessible, and impactful for underprivileged communities. By fostering parental involvement, providing learners with essential educational resources, and supporting children through targeted initiatives, we aim to create an equitable and inclusive learning environment that paves the way for a brighter future
Our Approach
Bringing the classroom experience into learners’ homes through educational tablets.
Promoting parental involvement and understanding technology to support learners.
Creating positive relationships with schools through workshops. Using a Three-sided (Learner, Teacher, and Parent) approach and consistent feedback.
Prioritizing literacy through libraries to enable understanding across other learning areas
Collaborating with experienced service providers for effective implementation of educational support.
Fostering skills development through vocational subjects and activities like robotics.
Providing aftercare support to learners, assisting with homework, projects, and facilitation.
Prioritizing the use of the mother tongue for teaching and learning purposes to create a conducive space for interlanguage to curb learning barriers.
Committing to addressing the challenges of learners with special needs using remedial therapists and learning tools.
In a short space of time, we would like to see teachers, parents, and learners as facilitators enabling learners to direct their learning.
To work at their own pace and engage with content that suits their needs.
